Srebarna, a village close to Silistra town, shelters a natural park, one of the “nature’s havens on the Danube” (Sevcsik 2014). A kingdom of lakes, backwaters, animals, birds and an endless cover of reed and forests. Although there has been an attempt of the socialist Bulgarian government to drain the area for reclaiming agricultural land during the 1970s, the powerful opposition stopped the state-led crime (see featured image).
Here, as elsewhere along the Bulgarian bank, a temporary fishermen village facing the Danubian island has appeared. It is inhabited from Spring to the end of Autumn. The long-term ethnographic fieldwork remains to explain why this happens only in Bulgaria, and why mirroring the islands.

Mitko, a fisherman from Tutrakan, our guide through the nearby islands remembers the place as a distinct island in his childhood.
Islands continue to grow, change their shape, appear and disappear. Here the photo of a new island coming out of the Danube’s waters to the joy of different birds (seagulls, pelicans and cormorants as far as we were able to observe).
The Radetki island: difficult to step on, as if the island would like to protect its mystery against intruders. The island is a heaven of vegetation, birds, frogs, snakes (I missed one: the snake’s speed exceeded by far the speed of the photographer) and jackals.
The Reni island, close to Dorobantu village (Calarasi county). A newcomer is the beaver to much of the dissatisfaction of local fishermen. They accuse beavers of destroying their fishing nets. Beavers do not care to explain themselves so far – they must be equally pissed off by human activities but no one heard them complaining so far. They continue to do their job.

The island also shelters small green cathedrals while a green carpet simply blocked up our walk.

Pe Dunăre: Păduri, insule, păsări și oameni
Srebarna, un sat aproape de orașul Silistra adăpostește un parc natural, unul dintre „paradisurile naturii de pe Dunăre” (Sevcsik 2014). Un regat de lacuri, izvoare, animale, păsări, este acoperit de stuf și păduri. Deși în anii 1970 guvernul socialist bulgar a încercat asanarea zonei pentru recuperarea terenurilor agricole, opoziția puternică a oprit crima (foto cover). Aici, ca și în altă parte de-a lungul malului bulgar, în fața insulelor dunărene a aparut un sat temporar de pescari. Este locuit din primăvară până la sfârșitul toamnei. Munca de teren etnografică pe termen lung rămâne să explice de ce acest lucru se întamplă numai în Bulgaria și de ce așezarea oglindește insulele.

Insulele continuă să crească, își schimbă forma, apar și dispar. Iată imaginea unei noi insule care apare din apele Dunării, spre bucuria diferitelor păsări (pescăruși, pelicani și cormorani, din ce am putut observa).
Insula Radetki: greu de pătruns pe ea, ca și cum insula ar dori să-și protejeze misterul împotriva intrușilor. Insula este un rai de vegetație, păsări, broaște, șerpi (din păcate viteza șarpelui a depășit cu mult viteza fotografului) și șacali.
Insula Reni, aproape de satul Dorobantu (judetul Calarasi). Un nou venit în zonă este castorul, spre nemulțumirea pescarilor locali. Aceștia acuză castorii că le distrug plasele de pescuit. Castorii nu au încercat să se explice până acum – trebuie să fie la fel de supărați de activitățile umane, dar nimeni nu i-a auzit plângându-se până acum. Ei continuă să-și facă treaba. Insula adăpostește mici catedrale verzi, în timp ce un covor verde pur și simplu ne-a blocat înaintarea.
